内容简介：
《大众英语》共60课，分上下两册，预计每课用6小时，全书共用360小时。学完全书，应能掌握英语的基本语音、语法知识以及大约3000个基本词汇，具备初步的听说读写的技巧。
酝酿出版这样一套普及英语的课本虽已有几年，但直接原因却是李岚清副总理的一次讲话。李副总理1994年10月26日视察北京外国语大学，接见学校领导和部分教授时说，改革开放的一大障碍是语言，尽管这些年来不少人在学英语，但真正过关的却不多，应该大力普及英语，北京外国语大学应该承担起这个任务。听了李副总理的讲话，我们决定立即着手编写一套以较快地掌握英语为目的的课本。编者中除北京外国语大学的英语教授外，还约请了广州师范学院的两位副教授。
在过去十几年中，已经出版了许多种英语课本，但绝大部分都是以某些特定的学习者为对象，例如，为大学英语专业的学生编写的课本不下六、七套，为文科和理工科学生编写的大学英语也有几套；此外还有为中学和小学编写的英语课本，为从事专业工作（如旅游、外贸、医护等）的人员编写的英语教科书等。但是，以业余学习者为对象，真正为普及英语而编写的课本却为数甚少。
在设计这套课本时，我们考虑到业余学习者的需要和特点，力图在较短的时间内帮助他们掌握英语，因为这部分学习者中很多人都在从事繁忙的工作，要求他们花大量的时间学习英语是不可能的。也就是说，使用新课本学习英语必须花时间少而收效快。这自然不是一件容易做到的事。但如果我们充分利用多年积累起来的外语教学经验，要做到较快较好地学会英语也不是不可能的。
